Summary Lucy's Italian Movie
In Rome, a film producer asks Lucy if she'd be interested in auditioning for his new film entitled "Bitter Grapes." Thinking that the film has something to do with the production of wine, she goes to the only non-automated winery left in the area.
Synopsis Lucy's Italian Movie
En route to Rome by train the Ricardos and Mertzes encounter director Vittorio Phillipi, renowned for his realistic and 'earthy' movies. Felipe thinks Lucy might be just right for a role in his latest film. Lucy, of course, wants to accept immediately, while Ricky takes Phillipi's card and says he'll call the director, who's anxious to cast the role as he's already started filming. At their Roman hotel, Lucy finds a magazine - in Italian, of course - with an article about Phillipi and his new film. A friendly bellboy translates the film's title - "Grappello Pungente" - as "Bitter Grapes". Assuming that the subject of the film is wine-making, Lucy starts planning a visit to a local vineyard to "soak up some local color". Ricky, claiming that the wine industry has enough problems without Lucy "lousing it up," forbids the inquiry but his interception of Phillipi's card and his appreciation of Fred's earlier mockery of Lucy's ambitions convince her that he doesn't want her to do the movie. After demonstrating to Ethel her ability to "shrug" her way through a conversation (including asking for 'a big pizza'), she gets the bellboy to direct her to the old-fashioned wine-making town of Turo and she's on her way.
In the Turo vineyard, a crew of mostly dumpy-looking peasant women hangs out together companionably, discussing how hot it is (one could bake a 'big pizza' on the courtyard stones). Lucy, in slightly more elegant peasant clothes, saunters in, holding a cluster of grapes as if to demonstrate her solidarity with grape culture. She tries to blend in but is mocked for the shoes she's wearing - they're all barefoot - and then when her 'shrugging' proves inadequate to hold any sort of coherent conversation, and they decide she's crazy. The foreman enters, and the other women shove Lucy to the side while the two women who mocked her the most are given the sought-after job of working in the huge vat in the center of the courtyard. Lucy's on her way out to the fields for a shift of picking when the foreman stops her and sends her into the vat with Teresa, one of the original pair, explaining that her feet are "like big pizzas". He leaves and the tough, heavyset Teresa shows a suddenly uncertain Lucy the ropes. The first contact of feet on grapes leaves Lucy a little squeamish, but she gets used to the feeling and begins stomping with vigorous enthusiasm, then has real fun doing dance steps, and pulling her partner into a square dance set only to be scolded back to focusing on work. Lucy sticks her tongue out behind Teresa's back...
At the hotel, Ricky comes back from checking out the venue where he'll be performing. Ethel, running into him, immediately gives away what Lucy's up to. She defends Lucy on the grounds that Ricky doesn't want his wife doing the movie. If he didn't, he explains, would he have called Phillipi to ask him to meet Lucy at the hotel? No, agrees Ethel, who thinks Lucy will probably "pick a few grapes, get bored, and come back."
Instead, Lucy is taking an unauthorized work break. Challenged, she tells Teresa "I'm-a pooped", and when the scolding continues, Lucy pushes Teresa away - and the other woman falls back into the grapes. Fed up, she flings a fistful of grapes into Lucy's face. One volley follows another, with Lucy consistently more accurate, until a final attempt to kick Teresa leads to Lucy slipping and falling into the vat. Teresa pounces on her immediately and a wild wrestling match ensues, with Lucy never regaining the upper hand.
Back a the hotel, Phillipi is insisting he must return to his studio, while Ethel entreats him to wait a little longer. Lucy's sudden entrance, grape stained from head to toe, stuns and shocks the director. Lucy explains the nature of her errand, with Fred quipping "Boy, when you soak up local color you don't mess around." Ricky, trying to help her salvage the situation, recommends that. she 'wash that blue stuff off,,' only for Lucy to admit that it won't come off. Phillipi explains that"Bitter Grapes" is a symbolic title, with no references to grapes or wine making in the film. Lucy was supposed to play a typical American tourist - a small part, one not worth worrying about, that he must film the next day. Since there is no guarantee that she will be in any condition to shoot the scene, he must withdraw the offer. Lucy comes up with a number of creative solutions, "a typical American tourist who fell in a wine vat, a typical American tourist who's homesick for America and that's why I'm blue.." and also offers to wear a wig, or even a mask, he says he can't take the chance. Suddenly, while saying goodbye to the Mertzes, he realizes that Ethel herself is the most typical American tourist he could imagine and offers her the role, which, to Lucy's horror, Ethel is thrilled to accept. As the men see Phillipi out, Lucy advances on Ethel, muttering epithets of revenge...
