Synopsis Overcount II. Lucifer's Choice

As punishment for Caterina's "misconduct", Francesco has placed her on house arrest. He also plans to take away her title of Duchess of Milan and disband the A.X. team. As A.X. team members Professor Wordsworth, Fr Havel, Fr Leon, and Tres "Gunslinger" Iques discuss the situation, they are joined by A.X. member and Deputy Enforcer Fr Hugue de Watteau, who has returned from Barcelona bearing a map of the Vatican given to him by Sr Noelle just before she died. She also told him about the "silent noise," and he warns the team that it is concealed within the obelisk that was presented to the city by Archbishop d'Este. Unbeknown to them, D'Este plans to unleash the silent noise weapon this very evening at Mass. Hoping to win Caterina's support to his cause, D'Este tells her of his plan to blow up Rome and, aided by the Contra Mundi, bring the world into a new era, with himself as leader, of course. Caterina refuses.

Sr Esther has located Abel grieving at the church where he and Noelle first met. She informs Abel that Caterina is in grave danger and needs his help. Abel arrives just in time to go Krusnik at 40% power and fight against the three demons that D'Este has called forth to kill Caterina. Suddenly, d'Este changes form and reveals himself as the silent noise organist Isaac Fernando Von Kampfer of the Order of Rosenkreutz, here as a messenger of the Archbishop who, at this very moment, is standing before the obelisk, preparing to initiate the silent noise system. Also a powerful magus, Von Kampfer manages to incapacitate Abel by calling forth the Arrow of Belial. While Abel lies stunned on the floor, Von Kampfer taunts him over his inability to stop the destruction of Barcelona and the death of Noelle. Abel ups his Krusnik power to 80% and leaps at Von Kampfer.

Meanwhile, the A.X. team is battling a huge, iridescent, jellyfishlike creature summoned by d'Este to protect the obelisk. Suddenly, the obelisk explodes, revealing a platform on which sits an organ with d'Este at the keyboard. He begins to play. Von Kampfer informs Abel that he must kill him or the city of Rome will be destroyed. Having made a vow to never take a life, Abel cannot kill Von Kampfer so he pleads with him to reveal the way to stop the destruction. The only way to stop it is to destroy the master control chip, Von Kampfer says, which has been implanted within his body. Abel is faced with the choice of killing Van Kampfer or watching Rome destruct.

Fortunately, Fr Havel has managed to sneak up behind d'Este and pull him from the organ, ceasing the silent noise. Knowing that his plan has failed, Von Kampfer decides that continuing to fight Abel is not worth the effort, so he makes like a tree and leaves...until they meet again. Abel collapses on the floor, and Caterina rushes to his side, pleading with him not to die.
